Gregor Townsend Gets First Test As Scotland Head Coach

Former Glasgow Warriors coach Gregor Townsend has taken over the reins of Scotland

Vern Cotter is off to France to take over Montpellier, and Gregor Townsend is now the head coach of Scotland.  Townsend said in an interview with The Scotsman, “It still feels a bit unreal arriving for my first Test match in Singapore.” Gregor Townsend has said that he plans to build on the success that Scotland has had in recent years. Especially considering Scotland’s performance in this year’s Six Nations, Scotland’s best performance in over a decade. The shoes he is expecting to fill are large, but nothing that Townsend cannot deal with.

Townsend’s last year with the Glasgow Warriors was not the ideal way to end his term. Glasgow missed the playoffs for the first time in six years. They, however, did make the quarterfinals of the European Champions Cup, before losing to eventual champions, Saracens. Gregor has had a great deal of success with Glasgow, winning the Pro 12 championship two years ago. A lot of the improvement to the quality of the national team can be traced back to him as well. With strength and overall fitness, the club teams set the bar for how fit the national team is. With the high concentration of Scottish national players on the Warriors squad, their improvement can be attributed to Townsend already.

Scotland’s traveling team a little light on their summer tour

The British and Irish Lions Tour has pillaged the four nations in the British Isles of players. Scotland less so due to  Warren Gatland’s selections leaving Scotland with few picks. The tour has taken some of Scotland’s best players regardless. Tommy Seymour, Stuart Hogg, and Greig Laidlaw were three of the pillars of Scotland’s success in this year’s Six Nations tournament. This will be a good tour for the younger Scottish players to establish a name for themselves on the international scene. If Scotland can have a successful summer tour in spite of missing their three heaviest hitters, it will be a great example of the progress their program has made.

Their first test match will be to face Italy this Saturday. They will be taking part in the first tier one 15s match in South East Asia. The match will be taking place in Singapore, at the Singapore National Stadium.

For Scotland to be successful Gregor Townsend will have to work through the growing pains that come with a new head coach. This will be a good test for him to get his feet wet in, as Italy is not the most difficult opponent they face on the tour. Their toughest competition will come against Australia next week.
