Texans Begin Rookie Minicamps Friday

Starting Friday, Bill O’Brien will finally get his mitts on Deshaun Watson, along with about 45 other rookies.

The official Houston Texans website announced on Wednesday that Friday would be the start of a three-day rookie minicamp for the draft picks, the undrafted free agents, and many players looking for a tryout. In his discussion with the media, O’Brien said that this minicamp would be a very busy weekend for both coaches and players.

“There’s a lot of work to be with these guys, but we have about 45-plus guys coming in so some of it’s evaluation,” O’Brien said. “We’ve had a number of guys over the years since we’ve been here that have been on our 53 that were undrafted, tryout guys. Some of it is installation and how much of it we can get in with these guys. It’s a fairly long weekend for them.”

Obviously, Watson will be the main draw at the rookie minicamp, but the Texans have multiple other players that will be fascinating to watch, starting with D’Onta Foreman. The big running back from the University of Texas will be the primary backup to Lamar Miller and should serve as a perfect secondary option. It’s not easy to rush for 2,000-plus yards in a college season, but Foreman achieved just that. Plus, it will be interesting to see him pair with Watson as the high-profile rookie weapons.

The offense may understandably be the primary focus after the 2017 NFL Draft, but don’t forget the defensive studs that joined Houston. Zach Cunningham from Vanderbilt was theoretically drafted to be a future replacement for Brian Cushing, but he could see the field quite often as a productive rookie. Given his productivity in college, Cunningham will be a focus for new defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel, as will defensive tackle Carlos Watkins from Clemson and corner Treston Decoud from Oregon State. Both of these later-round picks are more of depth choices, but they could impress if given the opportunity.

The rookie minicamp starts Friday and runs through Sunday. Which draft picks will make an early leap and which undrafted free agents will be surprise additions?
