USA Club Rugby Report: Life Running Eagles Runs Away With Men’s DII National Championship; David ‘Gonzo’ Gannon Named Man of the Match

Life Running Eagles are DII USA Rugby Club National Champions adding another title to their trophy case. The St. Louis Bombers played a solid match but were not prepared for Life’s relentless attack. Man of the Match honors went to Number 8 David Gannon, who scored 2 tries, set up several key runs, and played stellar defense in the Running Eagles’ 50-24 bombing of St. Louis.

First Half

St. Louis came out strong, physical, and tactical with a blitzkrieg on Life early,¬†resulting in a chip kick penalty but that would be the end of their attack for awhile. Life adjusted quickly to the Bombers’ defense and spread the field wide with quick ball and long passes where they created lanes and split defenders. At the 12-minute mark, Life took the lead with a David Gannon dot-down and they never looked back as the Running Eagles did just that and often. Gannon scored again and winger Jonathan Poole scored two before the half. St. Louis had no answer and didn’t find points again until minutes before the break with a Matt Skarin try. It wouldn’t get any easier for the Bombers after a 24-10 first 40.

Second Half

The second half started with a glimmer of hope for St. Louis as Life was issued a yellow card four minutes in but Life scored 2 tries with a man in the sin bin as Poole added a 3rd try and center Schuyler Whelan joined the points parade. It was 38-10 when Life got back to full strength and the scores kept coming. Scrum-half Marcus Walsh and reserve Weston Mollo added to the total before St. Louis fly-half Keegan Neal stopped the bleeding with a hard fought try making the score 50-17. Flanker Colin Fitzhenry finished off the scoring for the Bombers and the match, leaving the final tally at 50-24.

Future of Life D2

Life Running Eagles D2 are the prime example as to why the Southern Competitive Region (CR) needs a DI division; they need the higher level competition and they need it in their Union. There are indications of change coming to the Southern CR and if DI is coming, the rest of the DI nation needs to watch out, because Life is coming.
