Christian Yelich To The DL, Jake Marisnick Called Up
- Updated: June 15, 2014
Miami Marlins outfielder Christian Yelich will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain. Yelich had to leave Friday’s game after his first at bat. He looked uncomfortable running up the first base line and did not come out to play the field in the next inning, with Reed Johnson taking his place in left field. Sources say the Marlins will call up outfielder Jake Marisnick from AAA to take Yelich’s place. Marisnick nearly won a spot on the Opening Day roster with a ridiculous Spring Training, but that spot was ultimately given to Marcell Ozuna. Marisnick got off to a slow start in AAA, but has brought his numbers up to .264/.306/.404. He also has 17 stolen bases in 21 attempts. Despite this chance for him to show that his Spring Training success wasn’t a fluke and that his slow start in AAA was nothing more than an adjustment, there is no room in the Marlins outfield for him when everyone is healthy. Giancarlo Stanton has been one of the most valuable players in the league (4.4 rWAR), Marcell Ozuna has already amassed 2.4 rWAR, and Christian Yelich was doing a great job of setting the table at the top of the order. If the Marlins still believe they have a chance to contend for a playoff spot around the July 31st trade deadline, Marisnick could make himself into a valuable trade chip.
In other Fish news, pitcher Anthony DeSclafani was scratched from his start at AAA, giving some the idea that he may be called up to the big league club soon. Jacob Turner, who has struggled mightily this season, is scheduled to pitch on Tuesday and may be replaced by “Disco” in the rotation.
