Observations From Day One Of Atlanta Falcons Training Camp
- Updated: July 26, 2014
Day one of the Atlanta Falcons training camp is in the books now, and let me tell you. It was a blast to be out there and see the team out on the practice field. But here are my observations.
The Defensive Line Drills
- Not much to report, all of the linemen can move the dummy pretty well. Donte Rumph has some great ferocity though
Tight End Drills (pass catching)
There were only three ends actually over in the end zone. They were Toilolo, Pascoe and Pedersen. All three showed some solid foot work and ball handling skills. Pascoe seemed the most comfortable out there but Toilolo is sitting above him on the depth chart.
1-1 Drills QB Observations
- Ryan looked really good out there, he floated one pass
- Yates looked like a good backup out there, Matt going down may not hurt nearly as much if he ever goes down
- The others looked decent in drills
1-1 Drills WR-CB Observations
- Unfortunately all the WR look good in these drills but some looked worse than others.
- Julio mad some nice grabs
- Roddy looked like Roddy of 2012, crisp routes and great hands
- Harry Douglas looked fast and made all the catches thrown his way
- Hester missed one pass from T.J. Yates, this was more of Yates fault than Hester’s. Hester may look good out there as a WR with a better QB
- Jeremy Ebert looked really good out there, all his catches were contested and he brought them down. He looked fast out there and made some beautiful cuts
1-1 Drills LB and Safety- TE and RB Observations
- These were what I was most interested in, they always have trouble with dump-offs and TEs
- Worrilow did not get a pass break up but kept both catches to a small gain which made him look good in pass coverage
- Bartu beat Quizz on a route and got a nice pass deflection
- Pascoe, while decent in position drills looked really bad in 1-1 drills. Lowery jammed him off the line really well and Ishmeal got a nice pass deflection
General Observations
- Biermann looks a lot bigger
- Trufant looks a lot bigger
- Julio looked healthy
- Roddy Looked healthy
- Jake Matthews and Kroy Biermann got in a tussle in 11-11 drills
I also made note of the first and second team defense
First Team Defense
D-Line
- Babs, Soliai, and T. Jackson manned the front. There was a lot of meat there to push the offensive line
Linebackers:
- Worrilow and Bartu took snaps inside and looked solid against the rush and pass. Worrilow did not seem to shy away from contact
- Massaqui and Biermann were the edge rushers. They looked fine. Mass got the step on Baker some, but did get man handled once or twice
Defensive Backs:
- I did not make note of the sub-package in the nickel sorry
- Alford and Trufant were outside. Both looked great, but Trufant got beat by Julio in the 11-11 drills
- Lowery and Moore where in the back. Both looked comfortable together
Second Team Defense
D-Line:
- Jerry, Robertson, and Goodman
Linebackers:
- Angerer and Shembo
- Starr and Osi
Defensive backs:
- McClain and Wilson
- Ishmeal and Southward
Overall I was really impressed with everyone. Ebert by far looked the most impressive to me. He may have a spot come this September.
