Why Percy Harvin Is Poised For A Comeback
- Updated: July 27, 2014
PERCY HARVIN IS POISED FOR A COMEBACK
During the offseason of 2013, the Seattle Seahawks traded their 2013 first round pick (number 25 overall), a mid-round pick in the 2013 and a late round pick in 2014 draft for All-Pro Wide Receiver Percy Harvin.
At the time, everyone mocked the Seahawks, saying that they had overpaid for the former 22nd overall pick out of Florida. Citing his numerous injures and “migraines” that he suffered in Minnesota, they said he’d continue to underperform. At the start of the 2013 season, they seemed to be right, when the wideout suffered a hip injury in training camp and had to go through surgery performed by a top orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Bryan Kelly in New York. It was told that the Hawks would be lucky if he would be back for the end of the season. But, it seemed like he was going to come back at an incredible pace when he played versus his former team, the Vikings, in Seattle on week eleven, where he put up 17 receiving yards, but an amazing 58 yard kick return where it seemed like his speed was back. But it was for naught. After the game Harvin said he felt fine, but was looking forward to the bye week to feel better and leave his mark on the Saints. Coach Pete Carroll ended up letting the media know that there was some soreness in his hip and he was going to be sitting again.
He did manage to come back and play versus the Saints during the Divisional Round; he was on the field for eight plays before he was removed. It looked like the pundits were right and the Seahawks had overpaid for a player that was knocked out of the game by a terrifying, illegal pop by safety Rafael Bush. It seemed like the pundits were right and that the perpetually hurt and underachieving wide receiver would be just that and consistently underachieve.
But then this happened.
Percy had an AMAZING comeback game during the Super Bowl XLVIII where he posted only five receiving yards, but did get a game leading 45 rushing yards on two jet sweep plays. And that amazing 87 yard touchdown reception to put the Hawks up 29-0, ten seconds into the second half. “That’s the reason we brought him in,” said Carroll.
There is more than enough to believe Percy’s mystery “migraines” and injures that plagued him during his days with the Vikings should be done now that he’s in the limelight with a potential perennial Super Bowl contender Seahawks. When he did play with the Vikings he never had more than eight TD’s or 1000 yards receiving, but that year came from a top ten Quarterback of all time with Brett Favre. Past that, he never had a good passer in Minnesota. He has all of the measurables to be a top five receiver in Seattle this year. He has the speed, he has the Quarterback and it seems like he finally has the health and the drive to perform.
