Giancarlo Stanton Suffers Severe Injury After Being Hit By Pitch
- Updated: September 12, 2014
Last night, the Miami Marlins lost a lot more than a baseball game. Last night, the Miami Marlins lost a lot more than a game in the National League Wild Card race. Last night, the Miami Marlins lost the best everyday player in the National League. Last night, they lost the player that deserves to be the National League’s Most Valuable Player. On Thursday night, September 11th, 2014, the Miami Marlins lost rightfielder Giancarlo Stanton for (most likely) the rest of the season. At the moment, there was legitimate worry that they may have lost him for his entire career, although early reports say he should be able to make a full recovery.
In the top of the fifth inning, Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Mike Fiers was working on a three hit shutout. No one will remember his solid pitching performance, and he would likely have traded it for a different result. Trying to pitch Giancarlo inside, Fiers instead lost control of an 88 mile per hour fastball and struck Stanton on the left side of the face. Stanton immediately went down in a heap as Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy checked on him while Marlins players, trainers, and staff rushed out to assess the situation. What they found was a man in extreme pain, but reportedly always conscious. Post game reports stated that he had a laceration on his face along with dental damage and facial fractures. While the Marlins will likely let him rest for the remainder of the season, reports say Giancarlo would love to come back and play this year.
A day after the incident, Giancarlo Stanton himself tweeted, “The amount of support I have received from you guys has been tremendous & Heartfelt. I’m much better today & deeply appreciate your prayers!” Many fellow players expressed their concern along with members of the media and, of course, fans. It was a terrifying thing to see happen to the best player in the league, and right now the hope is for Giancarlo’s health. He is reportedly in good spirits and as mentioned above, has his heart set on playing another game this year. Given all the Marlins have gone through in 2014, it would be a nice bookend to see number 27 take one more at bat, even if it’s just a pinch-hitting appearance in game 162.
