Miami Marlins Opening Day Roster Set
- Updated: March 31, 2015
With a few moves officially made on Tuesday and a few more announced but not officially processed, the Miami Marlins have essentially set their Opening Day 25-man roster for the 2015 season. On Tuesday, pitcher Nick Masset was released and position players Tyler Colvin, Reid Brignac, and Cole Gillespie were all reassigned to minor league camp. Soon after, Reid Brignac opted out of his contract and became a free agent. Also, catcher Jhonatan Solano and utility player Jordany Valdespin were both informed that they would begin the season playing for AAA New Orleans. While not officially processed yet, pitcher Aaron Crow is expected to begin the season on the 15-day disabled list after experiencing a sore elbow.
That leaves the Marlins’ 25-man roster pretty clear, and it looks as follows:
Starters:
C- Jarrod Saltalamacchia
1B- Michael Morse
2B- Dee Gordon
SS- Adeiny Hechavarria
3B- Martin Prado
LF- Christian Yelich
CF- Marcell Ozuna
RF- Giancarlo Stanton
Rotation:
1- Henderson Alvarez
2- Mat Latos
3- Tom Koehler
4- Dan Haren
5- Jarred Cosart
Bench:
Jeff Mathis (C)
Ichiro Suzuki (OF)
Donovan Solano (IF)
Don Kelly (IF/OF)
Jeff Baker (IF)
Bullpen:
Steve Cishek
A.J. Ramos
Mike Dunn
Bryan Morris
Brad Hand
David Phelps
Sam Dyson
There will likely be early season changes based on injury and effectiveness, and because of a few solid signings, the Marlins actually have decent depth at AAA, especially with bullpen arms. All signs point to 2015 being a much more fun year to be a Fish fan than 2014 was. The roster looks better, but it still has some holes. The Washington Nationals are going to run away with the NL East and will likely have the best record in baseball when all is said and done. Right behind them in the NL East standings should be these Marlins though, hopefully with enough wins to play in a Wild Card game and see where things go from there.
