Cleveland Cavaliers Acquire A Useful Bench Piece Via Trade

The Cleveland Cavaliers acquired a useful player in a salary-dump trade last night.

This morning, Cavaliers fans woke up to the news that Dwyane Wade has decided to return home to Chicago to play for the Bulls rather than playing for the franchise he has played with since being drafted in 2003 - the Miami Heat.

While it would have been a big pickup for the Cavaliers to sign Wade, his near max contract would have been nearly impossible to absorb without getting rid of key pieces to a championship run, thus the Cavs respectfully bowed out.

But in the attempt to clear salary to be able to sign Wade, the Chicago Bulls had to trade away Jose Calderone and Mike Dunleavy Jr. to get the space required to bring on the future HOF’er.

One of those trades - the trade for Mike Dunleavy Jr. - actually helped the Cavaliers strengthen their bench by bringing on a 6-foot-9 player who is a career 37.6% 3-point shooter and a versatile wing-player who can play adequate defense. The last two seasons with the Bulls he has averaged 40.1% from beyond the arc.

A nice pickup? Let’s return to last offseason when Dunleavy was a free agent.

The Cavaliers - needing a forward/wing capable of reducing LeBron James’ minutes - decided that they wanted to go out and try to sign the then 34-year-old, as James has coveted his game and wanted to play with him.

But the Bulls re-signed Dunleavy to a mutually acceptable 3-year, $14.5 million dollar contract before the Cavaliers could even offer him a veteran’s minimum contract.

How interesting is that?

Today, the Cavaliers traded away fan-favorite Matthew Dellavedova, after they decided to not match his 4-year, $38.4 million dollar offer sheet that he signed with the Milwaukee Bucks, receiving back a $4.8 million dollar trade exception.

This is the TPE (Traded Player Exception) that the Cavaliers will use to absorb Dunleavy’s $4.8 million dollar contract literally for nothing, as they were losing Dellavedova anyhow.

It has been reported that Dunleavy was excited by the trade and is looking forward to playing with LeBron James and the Cavaliers.
