Is Gary Sanchez The Next Great Yankee Catcher?
- Updated: September 23, 2016
The New York Yankees have long awaited Gary Sanchez and now he has been a dream come true. He is only 23 years old and is doing so much for the club and has put the rest of the league on notice. Is there a chance that he can be named AL Rookie of the Year even though he has played only a month and a
Since his callup from the minors, Sanchez has 19 home runs, 38 RBIs, and is batting .333 in 44 games. Despite playing just a month a half, Sanchez could make some serious threats to the AL Rookie of the Year.
Yankees fans painfully remember in 1998 when Shane Spencer hit 10 home runs in a September callup, only to fizzle out the following year. Is Sanchez going to be another Spencer, or will he continue his power surge for years to come?
The Yankees are placing him third in their batting order. His bat is so powerful that teams are already pitching around him. One home game this season, a pitcher tried to intentionally walk him; he hit the ball and drove in a run. Sanchez will put all his force into balls he sees and can hit a home run every time he goes to bat.
If he can sustain the power surge, Sanchez can be someone the Yankees excitedly put into the lineup every day. But his path to everyday starter doesn’t come without some obstacles. Will the Yankees trade Brian McCann to make room for Sanchez? Even though McCann has a no-trade-clause will he waive it or can he remain a viable option off the bench? Another option is Sanchez could become an everyday DH. Most likely not because his defense has been perfect, throwing out base runners and has been catching the pitching staff well enough.
Could Gary Sanchez become the next Jorge Posada, because others (Francisco Cervelli and Jesus Montero) never lived up to expectations. The Yankees must decide where Sanchez will fit in 2017 and beyond because he is too good for the minor leagues. With Aaron Judge, Gary Sanchez, Greg Bird, Tyler Austin, Rob Refsnyder, Luis Cessa, and Luis Severino, the future of the Yankees looks bright.

Ever since I was a little kid I loved baseball especially the New York Yankees. I am so excited to be a freelance writer for them here on The Runner Sports. I am a diehard fan by watching any game by TV, Radio, or gamecast on the MLB.com app. I also draft a Yankee in the first round of fantasy baseball every year because I'm Yankee crazy.
