Phil Jackson Wants Out Of New York?
- Updated: April 10, 2016
Phil Jackson has been President of the New York Knicks for about two years now. He has made major changes to the personnel and culture of the organization in the two-year time span. He signed an aging star in Carmelo Anthony to a major deal back in 2014, and made a controversial draft pick that turned out to be arguably the best move that Phil has made with the team so far, but with all these things that he is responsible for, does he want out?
According to Michael Grange of Sportsnet, there are talks that he does indeed want out of New York:
“One is that Jackson badly wants out of New York, preferring to return back to Los Angeles to be near his fiancée, Lakers scion Jeanie Buss. Jackson is believed to have an out in his Knicks deal that could free him up to do just that at the end of next season unless things between him and Dolan become untenable before that.”
The thing that just does not add up is why in the world would Phil want to move to a different team to start from scratch? If he were to go to Los Angeles to work for the Lakers, would he fire most of their coaching staff and sign back the whole Knicks staff to teach D’Angelo Russell and co. the triangle offense? Because he clearly will not be involved in any organization unless they run his coveted offense.
If he were to do this, he would be completely leaving Carmelo Anthony in the dust. Phil Jackson is the main reason why Carmelo signed back with the Knicks in the summer of 2014. Phil gave him hope that he would be able to turn the team around in a few short years.
What about Kristaps Porzingis? He spent his whole entire rookie year learning the triangle offense and believing in his general manager, and then he’ll be forced to watch the organization that he once called the best organization in the NBA come crashing down before his very eyes.
Phil Jackson leaving and going to work for another NBA team just makes no sense at the moment. But if this rumor is true, all the New Yorkers can say goodbye to Carmelo Anthony as he waives his no-trade clause and goes to play for a more stable franchise.
